Abstract

The initial stimulus for the development of digital picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) was the desire for a digital alternative to the X-ray film archive. Digital image archives, however, are not enough, the nonphysical, digital transport of images is also necessary. Therefore, the introduction of such a system has to go hand in hand with the installation of digital image communication systems in order to do justice to the expression PACS.
