Vegetational and Climatic Transitions between Interglacial and Glacial Periods During the Last 1 Million Years in Northern Greece

Start of a Glacial

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASII,volume 3))

Summary

Analysis of the different phases in 1 million years vegetation history of Greece, as recorded in the Tenagi Philippon core, resulted in the distinction of three forest vegetations and one steppe vegetation. By comparison of those vegetations with present-day equivalents and corresponding climatic conditions, climate during the Quaternary was reconstructed.

In the beginning of interglacials an open forest with Pistacia was found, indicative for warm, wet conditions. Soon summers became drier, forcing an evergreen oak forest to develop. The last half of interglacials rather open, mixed coniferous and deciduous forests and cool, wet conditions prevailed. At the glacial maxima a dry continental climate with cold winters accompanied a steppe.
