Dependence, Independence or Interdependence of Positive and Negative Symptoms

Negative Versus Positive Schizophrenia

Abstract

Concerning the correlations of positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, three competing hypotheses exist, i.e. the severity-liability model of Gottesman et al. (1987) assuming positive associations between the two syndromes, Andreasen’s one-dimensional, bipolar model (Andreasen and Olsen 1982) with negatively correlated dimensions and Crow’s (1980, 1985) independency or dual-process model. Lenzenweger’s confirmatory factor analysis (Lenzenweger et al. 1989) about the goodness-of-fit of empirical data of 220 patients corresponds best with Crow’s dual-process model. Andreasen’s model of a bipolar dimension with factor loadings of opposite signs of positive and negative symptoms could not be confirmed.
