Summary
100 PMMA disc-lenses with compressible circular closed haptics (Pharmacia 801 A) and 200 PMMA disc-lenses with compressible open haptics (Polytech CD 257) were implanted with solid loop instruments into the capsular bag after capsulorhexis. The clinical results are consistent with our data derived from an experimental analysis of implantation carried out with SFVT graphic by Zirm. As the overall diameter of the CD 801 A disc-lens is smaller than the capsular bag this implant shows a tendency towards slight decentration of about 1 mm in 38% of the cases. The videographic analysis of the implantation of PC 257 disc-lenses with open compressible circular haptics demonstrates that by adaption of the lens to the size of the capsular bag its circular shape is maintained. This explains that we found no late decentrations in our clinical cases. We conclude that the lens with open circular haptic has major advantages over the lens with closed circular haptics.
