Abstract
In 1989, a gross total of 118,971 GWh electricity were generated in the Eastern part of Germany, the former GDR. This total is equivalent to a gross output of 7,135 MWh, or a net output of 5,851 MWh, per head of the population. The power generated came from the following sources:

Gas engine power stations 0.2%

Run-of-river power stations 0.2%
-
Pumped-storage power stations 1.2%
-
Nuclear power stations 10.3%
-
Steam power stations 88%.
