Zusammenfassung

Nachdem Dawson 1951 erstmals das Vefahren des Signal-Averaging zum Hervorheben reizbezogener EEG-Veränderungen eingesetzt hatte, sind bereits seit Anfang der 60er Jahre systematische Untersuchungen mittels visuell evozierter Potentiale (VEP) auch bei intensivmedizinisch versorgten, komatösen Patienten vorgenommen worden (Cohn 1964; Vaughan u. Katzman 1964; Bergamasco et al. 1966). Jedoch konnte sich diese Methode bis heute in ihrer Anwendung bei intensivmedizinischen Fragestellungen nicht allgemein durchsetzen, obwohl die Anwendung der VEP in der Routinediagnostik weit verbreitet ist und nahezu alle neurologischen Kliniken die Voraussetzungen zur Durchführung dieser Untersuchungsmethode erfüllen.
