Abstract
For the measurement of the analyzing power Ay in π+15 N elastic scattering at the PSI meson facility we have operated a 15NH3 polarized target on the π M1 channel for an extended period of time. The experimental set up allowed to measure in parallel the analyzing power A y in π+p scattering, for which good experimental data were already available. During the experiment the 15N polarization has been monitored continuously, and its value has been determined from the 15N TEP signal at 1.02 K, with an estimated error Δ P/P ~ ± 5%, using the PSI-NMR system, described elsewhere in these proceedings [1]. Initially, the proton polarization has been deduced from the measured 15N polarization under the assumption that the two nuclear spin systems in the sample were in thermal equilibrium [2].
New measurements cast doubts on the validity of the equal spin temperature (EST) theory in 15NH3.
