Abstract
Our follow-up project, the Berlin Study, is restricted to patients with early-onset conditions, i.e., adolescent patients suffering from eating disorders. The study originated from two sources: a retrospective outcome study of former adolescent anorectic patients that served as a pilot study and allowed the feasibility of the instruments and the methods to be tested (Steinhausen and Glanville 1983b,c) and a comprehensive analysis of 45 follow-up studies published between 1953 and 1981 (Steinhausen and Glanville 1983a). In addition, the Berlin Study considered a number of demands directed at design and methodology that had arisen in other critical reviews concerning the issue of outcome studies (Hsu 1980; Schwartz and Thompson 1981; Swift 1982).
