Zusammenfassung
Die externe Herzmassage wurde 1960 eingeführt. Vor dieser Zeit erforderten Wiederbelebungsversuche bei Herzstillstand eine Thorakotomie. Die Ergebnisse waren schlecht. Nachdem die Effizienz der externen Herzmassage zur Aufrechterhaltung der Zirkulation bei Herzversagen im Tierversuch nachgewiesen worden war, wurde sie auch in der Klinik mit großem Erfolg angewandt. Die Reanimationstechniken wurden weiterentwickelt und von der American Heart Association standardisiert. Kurse zum Erlernen der lebensrettenden Sofortmaßnahmen wurden der breiten Bevölkerung genauso wie Ärzten, Pflegepersonal und anderen Angestellten des Gesundheitssystems zugänglich gemacht.
