Abstract
At present, the most sensitive method for the detection and identification of malaria is the microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained blood smears [1]. The worldwide prevalence and distribution of malaria dictates a need for supplementary molecular procedures for this time-consuming and labor-intensive process. A uniform procedure which allows the identification not only of the individual species of the malaria parasite but that can be applied to the species-specific detection of parasitological infection in general would be of great value.
