Part of the book series: Monographs on Pathology of Laboratory Animals ((LABORATORY))

Abstract

Long-lasting cardiac overload in man as well as in experimental animals leads to an increase in heart weight (or better: heart weight/body weight ratio). Cardiac hypertrophy can result from increased physiologic activity (“physiologic hypertrophy”) or from disease states (“pathologic hypertrophy”). While physiologic hypertrophy may regress without major problems after discontinuation of exercise, pathologic hypertrophy, in a late stage, may progress into irreversible heart failure and cardiac decompensation.
