Angiosarcoma of the Renal Capsule, Mouse

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Monographs on Pathology of Laboratory Animals ((LABORATORY))

Abstract

In their early stages these tumors appear as dark red patches or nodules 1–2 mm in diameter on the capsule of the kidney, predominantly at its poles and on a surface. Larger tumors may spread over one of the renal poles. Advanced neoplasms become a hemorrhagic mass with a nodular surface and are up to 3 cm in diameter, replacing part of the kidney. At this stage the tumors are attached to the capsule and adhere to it when it is removed from the kidney. They can become large tumors which on the cut surface appear to surround the kidney without growing into it (Fig. 102). The tumors are frequently bilateral. Advanced tumors consist of soft hemorrhagic tissue containing necrotic material and cysts filled with blood. In some cases (Fig. 103) the tumor may compress and destroy the renal parenchyma.
