Abstract
T lymphocytes recognize antigens presented in the context of self MHC molecules via specific heterodimeric protein receptors (TCR) (Saito and Germain 1988). Two types of TCR have been described in vertebrates, e.g. αβ and γδ. In contrast to αβ T cells that recognize Ag in conjunction with classical class I and II MHC molecules and are responsible for Ag-specific cytotoxicity and help, respectively, the question regarding functions of γδ T cells remains basically unsolved.
