The Road to Open Distributed Processing (ODP)

Kommunikation in verteilten Systemen

Part of the book series: Informatik-Fachberichte ((INFORMATIK,volume 267))

Abstract

Open Distributed Processing (ODP) is a new work item in ISO and related standardization bodies. The goal of ODP is to provide a generic reference model for distributed processing in open, heterogeneous environments. This goes beyond the communication aspects that were the subject of the standardization activities for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI).

We describe the technical objectives of ODP, the current status and related activities. A group in ECMA is working on a support environment for ODP. In ISO as well as in ECMA it is felt that this standardization is at the forefront of distributed system technology evolution. Not always are answers readily available for questions arising in this work. Prototype implementations are available, but more research is needed.
