Zusammenfassung

Die diagnostische und begriffliche Festlegung der Termini „Bulimia nervosa“ und „Bulimie“ war von erheblicher Konfusion begleitet. Die Uneinigkeit in der Literatur bezog sich vor allem auf die gleichzeitige Verwendung des Begriffs „Bulimia“ für das Symptom und das klinische Syndrom (Robinson 1986), außerdem auf die Verwendung des Begriffs „Bulimia“ gemäß den diagnostischen Kriterien des DSM III (American Psychiatric Association 1980) und des Begriffs „Bulimia nervosa“ gemäß den Kriterien nach Russell (1979; s. auch Fair-burn 1984). Weiterhin war strittig, ob das Vorliegen einer Anorexia nervosa in der Vorgeschichte als notwendiges Diagnosekriterium anzusehen ist (Russell 1979, 1984). Diskutiert wurde schließlich auch die diagnostische Zuordnung von untergewichtigen bulimischen Patienten, sog. „bulimic anorexics“ (Garfinkel et al. 1980; Garner et al. 1983, 1985; Vandereycken u. Pierloot 1983).
