Beyond the Limit

  • Vladimir M. Chernousenko

The developing picture of the extent of the radiation contamination defies indifference. The first measurement devices became available and people started to learn that they are living in an area with more than 40 Ci/km2. They learned that they are producing foodstuff containing contamination levels that are beyond exceptional dose limits. They can only be compared to those of wartime, as reflected by the officially set temporary permissible 200 levels. In some cases, 30 – 90% of the tested milk samples were higher than these norms, as well as meat, feed, and other agricultural products. Although privately owned livestock had been confiscated, animals remained on the collective farms.
