Abstract
When the trade in transplant organs from live donors first came to public attention in Britain a year or two ago, what was most remarkable about the immediate response was its unanimity. From all points of the political compass, from widely different groups who were normally hard pressed to agree about anything, came indignant denunciations of the whole business: it was a gross exploitation of the poor by the rich, repugnant in every respect, and should be banned forthwith.
