Abstract
The renal transplant unit in Glasgow serves a population of 2.75 million, and performs over 100 renal transplant operations each year. The first transplant from a living related donor was carried out in 1969. Since nephrectomy in a healthy person involves a small but appreciable risk, the procedure of living related transplantation needs careful evaluation. Both patient and graft survival in the recipient, and donor assessment protocol and outcome require audit. This study reviews the experience of 20 years, with particular regard to the assessment of and outcome for the donor.
