Abstract
While I thank the World Health Organization (WHO) and the IPSEN Foundation for having invited me to this meeting in the heart of a Europe which is becoming more and more united, I feel the need to define more clearly the quality of my contribution to avoid possible misunderstandings. Although I have completed my philosophical and theological studies as a Roman-Catholic priest and gained a degree in both, I have no official charge, nor do I represent any institution. The following thoughts derive from my personal interest in burning questions of the present day and they are expressions of personal convictions, which I hope are still developing in my own mind.
