Abstract
The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) (2n = 36) is a member of the monocot family Arecaceae, which includes about 225 genera and 2600 species (Corner 1966). It is dioecious and differs from other palm species in its ability to produce offshoots and edible fruit. The trunk may reach up to 30 m in height and develops from the persistent leaf bases which are arranged in a helical pattern. The terminal crown of the adult tree consists of 100–120 pinnate leaves (Fig. 1).
