Zusammenfassung
Die photoautotrophen Farnpflanzen sind wie die Moose Landpflanzen, wenn man von den wenigen Ausnahmen absieht, die sich sekundär wieder an das Leben im Wasser angepaßt haben. Man findet Farne in allen Klimazonen, zumeist an feuchten und oft schattigen Standorten. Nur wenige Farne leben in trockenen Gebieten und in der borealen Zone. Ihre größte Mannigfaltigkeit erreichen sie in den Tropen. In gleicher Weise wie die Moose, mit denen sie unter dem Begriff Archegoniatae zusammengefaßt werden, kann man die Farne aufgrund ihrer Plastidenstruktur, ihrer Photosynthese-Pigmente und der Speicherung von Stärke als Reservestoff von den Grünalgen ableiten (Teil I, Abb. 12).
