Abstract
At southern California rookeries and at nearby nonbreeding areas, the number of California sea lions peaks during the summer breeding season (Bonnell et al. 1983). At central California haulouts north of the breeding rookeries, numbers of adult and subadult males (Bartholomew 1967) peak during the spring and fall migration (Orr and Poulter 1965; Mate 1975; Bigg 1985; Brown 1988; Huber et al. in press) and decline during the summer when adults are at the breeding rookeries.
