Abstract

The order Podostemales is represented by the family Podostemaceae which shows several important features: (1) binucleate glandular tapetum, (2) pollen grains in pairs in some members, (3) anatropous, bitegmic, tenuinucellate ovules, (4) formation of pseudo-embryo sac, (5) Apinagia, Dicraea, and Podostemum type (bisporic) of development of female gametophyte, (6) absence of triple fusion and, consequently, absence of endosperm, (7) Solanad type of embryogeny, (8) development of haustoria from the binucleate, basal cell of suspensor, and (9) tegmic seed.
