Zusammenfassung

Um die Morbidität und Mortalität von Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen zu senken, ist die Identifizierung möglichst aller Risikofaktoren des kardiovaskulären Systems unerläßlich. In mehreren prospektiven Untersuchungen wurde die pathogenetische Relevanz von arterieller Hypertonie, Hyperlipidämien, Diabetes mellitus, Nikotinkonsum und Adipositas bestätigt. Hingegen ist die linksventrikuläre Hypertrophie (LVH) als potentieller Risikofaktor für Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen lange Zeit nicht beachtet worden, da sie bei Patienten mit arterieller Hypertonie als chronische Anpassung an die Nachlasterhöhung im systemischen Kreislauf und damit als ein physiologischer kompensatorischer Prozeß angesehen wurde. Zahlreiche prospektive Untersuchungen konnten jedoch nachweisen, daß die LVH ein eigenständiger und insbesondere von der arteriellen Hypertonie unabhängiger Risikofaktor für die Morbidität und Mortalität von Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen ist.
