Abstract

After World War II, when the occupation forces had destroyed the big business families (Zaibatsu) which had developed since the Meiji period (1868), the manufacturing industries became the most important sector of the Japanese economy. In the later post-war period, the service sector industries began to dominate the economy, but even in 1986, 29.7% of the GDP was produced by the manufacturing and mining industry (1970: 36.8%)[1].
