Abstract

The knowledge of the real behavior of mixtures is important for different applications. This is especially true for the synthesis, design and simulation of separation processes where the phase equilibria of the systems to be separated have to be known.

For the description of the phase equilibria different thermodynamic models are available, but the use of these models for the often complex calculations requires beside reliable pure component and mixture properties fast and safe algorithms.

In this paper a personal computer system is introduced, which, besides the Dortmund Data Bank with all the stored thermophysical properties, will offer a multitude of calculation programs easily applicable to find the solution for very different tasks in chemical engineering and other fields.

Basic principles for the development of such a system are discussed with respect to programming techniques, system structure and user interface. Various examples demonstrate the usefulness and easy applicability of the program package to problems of practical interest. In addition, possible future extensions are discussed.
