Abstract

Since the early days of ultrastructural studies of bacterial cells it is known that bacteria do not have nuclei as eukaryotic cells. The genome of bacteria is localized in a structure which is known as the nucleoid. Other names used for this structure are chromosome, chromoid, nuclear region, nuclear body, or nucleoplasma (Drlica 1987; Brock 1988). The history of nucleoid research has been summarized by Brock (1988).
