Inflammatory mediators in ulcerative colitis
Eicosanoids, 20-carbon fatty acids derived from arachidonic acid, have been implicated as mediators in several inflammatory conditions. Since Gould first described increased prostaglandin excretion in stools in patients with ulcerative colitis, there have been numerous reports of increased eicosanoid synthesis and release in the inflamed colon .
