Abstract
A magnetostrictive sonar transducer operating at 1350 Hz is described. The device is a small double-ended piston containing three terfenoi rods in independent magnetic circuits. The paper presents detailed aspects of the design and a summary of test results. An important observation is the effect of heat on terfenoi, which causes changes in elastic modulus and hence resonant frequency. Experience with this device allows a course to be set for future studies, both into material properties and associated transducer designs.
