Abstract

We owe the basic ideas and models of selection to Fisher (1922, 1930), Haldane (1924–34), and Wright (1931). After developing the multiallelic equations of selection in Sect. 4.1, we shall study their dynamics for two alleles in Sect. 4.2 and generalize to multiple alleles in Sect. 4.3. We shall analyze the diallelic case with a constant level of inbreeding in Sect. 4.4 and investigate variable environments in Sect. 4.5. Sections 4.6, 4.7, and 4.8 treat intra-family selection, maternal inheritance, and meiotic drive as examples of the many possible less common selection schemes that require modifications of the formulation of Sect. 4.1. We shall discuss multiallelic mutation-selection balance in Sect. 4.9 and consider overlapping generations in Sect. 4.10. A weak-selection analysis for density- and frequency-dependent genotypic fitnesses will be performed in Sect. 4.11.
