Zusammenfassung

Extraintestinale Erkrankungen durch Escherichia coli, der zahlenmäßig bedeutendsten Spezies der aerob wachsenden Darmflora des Menschen, sind häufig und betreffen fast alle Organsysteme: Harnweginfektionen, Pneumonie, Osteomyelitis und septische oder meningitische Komplikationen bei abwehrgeschwächten Patienten oder Neugeborenen. E. coli spielen aber auch an ihrem natürlichen Standort eine bedeutende Rolle als Erreger von Durchfallerkrankungen.
