Abstract

Swartboskloof was chosen as one of a network of research sites within the fynbos biome, at which detailed ecological studies were to be undertaken. The research was conducted under the auspices of the Fynbos Biome Project, an enterprise within the National Programme for Environmental Sciences (Jarman 1982; Huntley 1987). The Fynbos Biome Project was initiated in 1979 (Day et al. 1979), and aimed to support interdisciplinary projects that included research designed to meet local needs as well to provide contributions to the international programme of SCOPE (Scientific Committee On Problems of the Environment).
