Calcium-Binding Proteins of the EF-Hand-Type and of the Annexin Family: A Survey

  • Chapter
Novel Calcium-Binding Proteins

Abstract

Calcium as an ubiquitous second messenger regulates many cellular functions including contraction, secretion, cell growth, differentiation, neuronal excitability, and metabolism. Disturbance of calcium homeostasis has been implicated (directly or indirectly) in several degenerative disorders of the central nervous system (e.g., Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, acute and chronic epilepsy) and others (e.g., hypertension, malignant hyperthermia, ischemia, renal and heart failures, or rheumatoid arthritis).
