MRP8 and MRP14, Two Calcium-Binding Proteins Expressed During Myelopoiesis

  • Chapter

Abstract

Circulating blood cells must be regenerated continuously throughout life. Once mature, the vast majority of these cells are destined to remain functionally active only for a limited time before being removed from the circulation. This process, known as hematopoiesis, gives rise to many progenitor cells committed to distinct pathways of differentiation. A key advantage of the hematopoietic system is that blood is a liquid tissue easily separated into its unicellular components; it provides a useful experimental system to explore the function of proteins in cell differentiation and proliferation.
