Das Gelenk gilt als die funktionelle Einheit der Synovialmembran, des Gelenkknorpels und des subchondralen Knochengewebes. Die Änderung einer der eng verbundenen Komponenten wird bei allen Gelenkprozessen von der konsekutiven Veränderung der beiden anderen Komponenten gefolgt.
