Abstract
The immunologic properties of extracts of human buffy coat leukocytes were initially described by Lawrence in the 1950’s (Lawrence 1955). These investigators were able to show that administration of dialysates prepared from the leukocytes of individuals having a strong sensitivity to a given antigen could affect the ability of the recipient to mount a delayed type hypersensitivity reaction to that antigen. The nature of this transfer phenomenon and its mediators was not clear. A series of reports appeared over the next several years which described the clinical benefits of administering leukocyte dialysates to patients with conditions in which a disordered immune system contributed to the disease process. A striking example of the effect of such treatment was seen in patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (Fudenberg, et al. 1972).
