Rasterelektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen an explantierten Intraokularlinsen

Summary

We removed 3 posterior chamber lenses and 2 anterior chamber lens from a total of five consecutive eyes referred to us for chronic intraocular inflammation following cataract surgery. Upon scanning electron microscopic examination we could demonstrate accumulations of bacteria on all of the lenses. This finding was accompanied by the occurrence of a thin cellular membrane probably representing a host response against the bacteria. As opposed to these observations, we failed to demonstrate bacteria on 3 IOLs removed for bullous keratopathy and on 3 lenses removed for dislocation.
