Abstract

After constructing a planning model to select the allocation of $180 million to improve the rivers’ water quality in the Comunidad de Madrid through the construction of more than 30 wastewater treatment plants, it became necessary to transform the planning model, based on the QUAL2E program, into a management model. The management model described here has been built considering five main characteristics: 1) the specific conditions of the system of rivers and wastes in Comunidad de Madrid; 2) ease in operation without special knowledge of modeling; 3) ability to modify input data easily; 4) ability to define different effluent treatment characteristics; and 5) an output based on very detailed interactive drawings with the River Water Quality Data Base. An option to calculate the overall efficiency of the whole wastewater treatment plant system required to achieve the river quality standards has also been incorporated within the management model.
