Zusammenfassung

Bereits im 16. Jahrhundert erfolgten kasuistische Beschreibungen von Status epileptici, etwa durch Michael Gavassetius. Gehäuft auftretende epileptische Anfälle wurden jedoch erst im 19. Jahrhundert definitorisch von epileptischen Einzelanfällen abgegrenzt. Calmeil verwendete dafür 1824 den Begriff „etat de mal“. Er umschrieb damit eine Folge großer Krampfanfälle in kurzen Intervallen, verbunden mit hoher Letalität.
