Abstract

The simultaneous removal of stomach, duodenum, upper jejunum, liver, pancreas, and spleen is an extremely radical means of treatment. Similar operations such as hemipelvectomy, regional pancreatectomy, and even superradical mastectomy have only been of limited success in advanced tumors. However, in metastatic involvement of lymph nodes and liver, the removal of the upper gastrointestinal organs may be taken into consideration. The organs of the upper gastrointestinal tract, including liver and pancreas, develop from the foregut of the human fetus. The common vascular and lymphatic supply of the foregut structures may be the underlying reason for tumor spread possibly being restricted to this compartment, and thus justify extirpation of the whole compartment.
