Taucht in einem naturwissenschaftlichen Forschungsprojekt das Wort „Mensch“(japanisch: „Hito“) auf, werden die Leute gleich mißtrauisch wegen etwaiger Implikationen. Das menschliche Leben und sogar die in den Genen programmierte Essenz des Lebens gelten nach statistischen Umfragen in Japan als etwas Heiliges, das anzutasten immer einer Rechtfertigung bedarf (Dentsu 1985; Information Office 1986).
