Abstract
Melanocytes are derivations of neural crest and are widely distributed throughout cutaneous and mucosal surfaces. They are present in nasal mucosa, in the glands, superficial and deep stroma of the septum and turbinates, but being particularly common in the supporting cells of the olfactory epithelium though appear to be absent in fetal and neonatal nasal mucosa [1]. In the oral cavity, melanin deposition is common on the buccal mucosa, gingiva, hard and soft palate as well as the lips and tongue. However, 0.5–30% of all oral mucosal melanoma are preceded by a hyper-pigmented lesions [2–4]. In the Japanese 66% have associated mucosal melanosis [5] and benign pigmentation has been reported in 87% of Negroes [6].
