Determinants of the Restructuring of Poland’s Economy in the 1980s

  • Conference paper

Abstract

One common feature of the strategies for economic growth experienced so far in Poland, regardless of the labels put up on them in the past, has been the emphasis on extensive growth, which continued until the mid-1970s amid an abundance of raw materials and labour. For many decades, Poland was a country relatively rich in factors of production. Therefore, in forming the spatial structure of the economy, it was possible to give precedence to recommendations arising out of ideological doctrines over those leading to economic efficiency. Stereotyped thinking in quantitative terms predominated, because it was possible to achieve almost any desired production growth simply by increasing the scale of operation.
