Abstract
This work will examine the processes of innovation diffusion and innovation acquisition within a regional context characterized by the overwhelming presence of firms in traditional sectors, offering some elements of analysis and interpretation of the manner in which technology is generally acquired and utilized. Two main analytical traditions have provided major theoretical contributions to the understanding of the role of technology development in firms: ‘innovation diffusion’ literature and ‘technical change’ economics. An enormously rich amount of theoretical developments, fieldwork and analyses have been carried out in the last decades by many scholars. In spite of this, two main criticisms can be made of their work.
