Abstract
A rapid diagnostic test for the detection of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was developed using primers flanking a sequence in the structural gene for the thiol-activated haemolysin, listeriolysin O.The sequence detected was specific for Lm and was not found in other haemolytic or non-haemolytic Listeria species, or in species of other genera known to produce thiol-activated cytolysins. This technique detected Lm in acute-phase sera from patients with Lm bacteraemia but not in samples of sera from patients with bacteraemia associated with the isolation of other bacterial species.
