Abstract
A new human herpes-virus (HHV-6) was isolated recently from cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells derived from patients with lymphoproliferative disorders [1]. HHV-6 shows the characteristic structural and morphological features of an herpes-virus, but differs in nucleotide sequence and antigenic properties from other human herpesviruses. Infection with HHV-6 is widespread in the population. The virus appears to be the causative agent of exanthem subitum, a common childhood disease [2]. Moreover the virus is suspected to be involved in lymphatic disorders [3,4]. With the highly sensitive technique of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) we examined different lymphatic biopsies for the detection of viral HHV-6 DNA.
