The Constrictor Effect of the Endothelins on Bronchiolar and Tracheal Smooth Muscle

  • Chapter
The Endothelins

Abstract

Shakespeare might have been describing the consequences of inhaling endothelin-1, because irrespective of whether the polypeptide is administered by aerosol (Lagente et al. 1989) or it is applied topically (Uchida et al. 1988; Hay 1989; Turner et al. 1989 a, b) bronchiolar and tracheal smooth muscle respond by developing a sustained contraction.

“And in this harsh world, draw thy breath — in pain”.

W. Shakespeare: in Hamlet
