Transdermal Administration of Nitrates

Nitrates are given transdermally to avoid first-pass hepatic metabolism and to achieve constantly high plasma concentrations. The most widely used method is transdermal nitroglycerin patches (discs). Nitroglycerin and ISDN ointments are also available.
