Morphological and Functional Studies on Implanted Diffusion Membranes

Abstract

Immunoisolated transplantation of islets of Langerhans inside preformed membranes may be a suitable therapy of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (1.2). In vitro, morphological and functional survival of islets inside the device similar to that of free floating islets has been demonstrated previously (3). Nevertheless, for a transplantation therapy, behaviour of the artificial membranes in vivo must be investigated. In this study foreign body reaction towards different membranes was examined histologically and insulin diffusibility of explanted membranes was determined.
