Experimental Determination of Surface Phonons by Helium Atom and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Surface Sciences ((SSSUR,volume 21))

Abstract

The experimental study of phonon dispersion curves is motivated by the quest for a detailed understanding of the forces between the atoms of condensed matter in the bulk and at the surface. Bulk phonons have been studied by neutron scattering since about 1955, when Brockhouse and Stewart [5.1] reported on the first measurements on aluminum. The study of surface phonons by particle scattering is a rather recent development. Neutrons are not well suited for surface studies because of their very small cross sections but nevertheless have been used to study adsorbates on layered compounds (graphite) [5.2] or vibrations on powder particles with a large ratio of surface to volume areas [5.3].
